Turning research, ideas and expertise into investable businesses takes more than ambition alone. Many founders face a difficult gap between developing an innovation and securing the capital needed to build a company around it.

The Scottish Universities Ignition Fund has been created to help bridge that gap.

Designed for businesses at the earliest stages of development, the Fund provides investment to support company formation, product development and commercial validation. It forms part of the wider Scottish Universities Fund, a national platform designed to strengthen the pathway from university innovation to high-growth businesses.

Whether emerging from academic research, university collaboration or entrepreneurial activity connected to Scotland’s universities, the Ignition Fund is intended to help promising ventures take their next step with confidence.

    Why the Ignition Fund exists

Scotland’s universities are internationally recognised for research and innovation. Every year they generate new technologies, intellectual property and entrepreneurial opportunities with the potential to create significant economic value.

However, many of these opportunities struggle to access funding at the earliest stages of development. Founders often need time and capital to test assumptions, build teams, engage customers and demonstrate commercial potential before they are ready for larger investment rounds.

The Ignition Fund has been designed to address this challenge by providing access to dedicated early-stage capital alongside wider support from Scotland’s innovation ecosystem.

By helping companies establish strong foundations from the outset, the Fund aims to increase the number of businesses that successfully progress from innovation to sustainable growth.

    Who the Fund is for

The Fund supports businesses with a meaningful connection to one or more Scottish universities.
This may include university spin-outs, founder-led start-ups commercialising research, businesses built around university-developed intellectual property, or ventures that have emerged through university partnerships and innovation programmes.

The focus is not limited to a single sector. The Fund is intended to support ambitious businesses operating across Scotland’s key innovation strengths, including:

  • Health and life sciences
  • Energy transition
  • Data and digital technologies
  • Advanced manufacturing

Every opportunity is assessed on its individual merits, with consideration given to the strength of the team, the commercial opportunity and the potential for long-term growth.

Investment approach

The Ignition Fund focuses on businesses at the pre-seed and seed stages, supporting founders as they move from concept to commercial traction.

Investment is expected to range from £250,000 to £1.5 million, depending on the needs of the business and stage of development. The Fund is intended to provide patient capital that enables founders to focus on building strong, sustainable companies rather than pursuing short-term milestones alone.

As part of the wider Scottish Universities Fund, the Ignition Fund also sits within a broader investment pathway. Companies that successfully grow and scale may benefit from future opportunities through the Accelerator Fund and wider support available across the ecosystem.
